Mr.
Shams,
Thanks for writing
to us.
1) Our website has
a technical problem in the event section. The link is
active but the website doesn't show the past events. It
only shows upcoming events. You can see that other past
events don't show up on that page too. We will try to
fix the problem. However, you can find a good archive of
all our past events on our Facebook page with all the
details. You can also find the active website link here
for the Vancouver event here:
www.iccongress.ca/discussion_session_with_icc_and_mp_majid_jowhari_vancouver
2) We prepare and
send press releases to media about the work of the
organization. This is a regular media relations practice
in any organization.
3) The Iranian
Canadian Congress organized the event in Vancouver with
the help of our local team of volunteers and some of the
Iranian Canadian student organizations. The first step
in establishing a local or regional chapter is to put
together a team of volunteers interested to help the
organization. Over the past 6 months we have spent a lot
of time to find interested volunteers in Vancouver and
we are happy that now there is a team of volunteers
there working for the ICC. We hope that in near future
we can establish local teams in other Iranian Canadian
populated cities as well. This is a long process and it
takes a lot of time and energy but we need our members
to be patient and to support us through this process. On
our part we are doing our best.
Regards, Behzad

Message from the ICC Board
posted by Iranian
Canadian Congress (Icc) | 46sc
December 27, 2016
Here is a
holiday greeting message from the ICC Board of
Directors. The message includes some of the
highlights of the organization's achievements in
the second half of 2016.
Dear members and supporters of the Iranian
Canadian Congress,
From all of us at the Iranian Canadian Congress,
we would like to wish you a joyous holiday
season and a Happy New Year! We had a great year
in 2016 and we look forward to the new
challenges and opportunities 2017 will bring.
As we approach the end of the year, we reflect
upon the accomplishments of the Iranian Canadian
Congress in the second half of 2016, since the
last Annual General Meeting in May. Here
we are happy to share few of the highlights with
you:
1) For
the first time to identify and prioritize our
activities, we launched a three-month community
consultation process that provided us the input
for putting together our list
of priority policies and shaped our position
on various issues that affect Iranian Canadians
ever since.
2)
During summer of 2016, for the first time we
launched a successful internship
program. The program provided 6 Iranian
Canadian university students the opportunity to
develop their skills while helping their fellow
community members.
3) Held
a forum
for representatives of 20 Iranian Canadian
non-profit organizations which resulted into
collaborations between some of these
organizations and the ICC. Collaboration of the
ICC with Tirgan during the summer internship
program and the support provided by multiple
organizations for the Simorgh Gala are two
successful examples in the past 6 months.
4)
Through a successful partnership with ASL19 a
first of its kind web
application was developed and added to the
website of the ICC for monitoring news related
to Iran in the House of Commons.
5) To
highlight and celebrate the contributions of our
community to Canada’s multicultural society we
hosted the first annual
Simorgh Gala. A prestigious and unique event
participated by 400 guests including politicians
and elected officials from the three major
Canadian political parties and all levels of
government.
6) To
encourage the culture of volunteerism and
community work, as part of the Simorgh Gala we
recognized 7
community leaders and activists who have
dedicated their lives to build a stronger
Iranian Canadian community.
7) With
the help of local volunteers for the first time
in the decade long history of the ICC we have
established a local team in Vancouver and
earlier in December we successfully hosted a
first discussion
session with our community members there.
8) By
implementing a successful communication and
outreach plan we have doubled our network of
supporters in the past six months and
significantly expanded our reach in Iranian
Canadian populated cities outside of the GTA.
9) Based
on the community consultation process and our
list of priority policies we planned and
executed a strong advocacy campaign to urge the
Government of Canada to reestablish diplomatic
relations with Iran and facilitate reopening of
the embassies in Tehran and Ottawa. As part of
the campaign we met with members of parliament
and officials at Global Affairs Canada,
connected with Canadian media, and launched a
formal parliamentary petition to the House
of Commons that has so far received 12,000
signatures from across Canada.
10) In the
past six months over 50 volunteers have helped
us in various events and initiatives. Their help
strengthened the organization and helped us to
achieve significant accomplishments.
As the Iranian Canadian Congress enters its 10th year
of operation, we are proud that with your
support this organization is on the right path
to become an influential and strong body for
advancing the interests of the Iranian Canadian
community.

Letter to TD Bank: Access to Online Banking in Iran
Here is a letter from our Policy Chair to TD
Bank regarding complaints we have received about TD's
restriction on access to online banking in Iran.
To TD Corporate
and Public Affairs,
The mandate of the Iranian-Canadian
Congress (ICC) is to advance the interests of
Iranian-Canadian community.
We have received complaints from members
of our community regarding the fact that they cannot
access their online banking services in Iran (we have
attached a screenshot of this denial to this email). We
request a response from TD regarding this issue; we and
our advisers have analyzed Canadian sanctions laws in
regards to banking and found no reason whatsoever for
your institution to limit online services to your
customers. We ask that you respond to this email within
the week, as this case is of utmost importance to our
constituents.
Sincerely,
--

ABOUT SIMORGH GALA: The Iranian Canadian
Congress is presenting the first annual Simorgh Gala to
celebrate the contributions of the Iranian Canadian
community to Canada’s multicultural society and recognize
the hard work and dedication of our community leaders, the
movers, and shakers; those who have passionately worked for
many years to improve the lives of their fellow community
members and helped to enrich the quality of life and culture
of the community at large.
Guests will enjoy a delectable dinner
while enjoying the celebration of the Simorgh award
recipients, notable presenters as well as featuring
performances from some of the very best entertainers and
musicians in our community. Several dignitaries from the
three levels of government (federal, provincial and
municipal) and from different Canadian political parties
will be present at this gala.
‘Simorgh’, this ancient bird of Persian
mythology symbolizes many qualities. Although the stories of
this bird are symbolic and profound at the same time, the
message is simple; unity and love. As Attar beautifully
explains in ‘The Conference of the Birds’, it was the
solidarity among the birds that gave them the courage to
survive and find their way.
Join us in this first Simorgh Gala to
celebrate our community’s achievements and thank those who
have dedicated their lives to the betterment of our
community.
List of honorary guests, dignitaries and
Simorgh Award recipients will be announced soon.

On anniversary of Iran deal, Iranian Canadian
Congress urges Canada to reengage with Iran
ICC Web
Here is a statement from the ICC Board of
Directors on the first anniversary of Iran deal:
On anniversary of Iran deal, Iranian Canadian
Congress urges Canada to reengage with Iran.
The historic nuclear agreement reached
between Iran and the P5+1 on July 14, 2015, officially known
as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), marked a
milestone in the history of world diplomacy. It showed the
ability of diplomacy and dialogue to prevent conflict and
foster international cooperation. According to a recent
International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) report, Iran has
honoured the terms of the agreement, and implementation of
the deal is occurring in phases. The Government of Canada,
after the election of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, opted
to lift the unilateral sanctions (i.e. those not part of UN
resolutions) on Iran on February 2016, leaving mainly those
sanctions related to arms and designated individuals. Today,
as the deal marks its first year anniversary, the Iranian
Canadian Congress acknowledges the importance of diplomacy
and encourages the Government of Canada to take the path of
diplomatic engagement and dialogue with Iran.
The deal presents the opportunity for
countries to foster numerous types of economic, political,
cultural, and academic cooperation with Iran in exchange for
considerable benefit. While Canada lifted most of its
sanctions in February 2016, Canadian companies and
institutions have lagged behind that of our allies. A major
barrier preventing further economic engagement today is the
lack of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The
Canadian business community can benefit greatly from
reengagement with Iran. Canada’s exports to Iran peaked at
$772 million in 1997. This number declined precipitously to
$67 million in 2014 after Canada imposed sanctions on Iran.
The Iranian Canadian Congress believes that
continued cooperation between Iran and Canada’s closest
allies during the past year serves as a good example for
Canada to engage in diplomacy and dialogue. This course of
action not only strengthens the positive role Canada can
play in the country, especially in terms of providing
essential services to Canadian citizens (often
Iranian-Canadians) who visit or live in Iran, but can also
bring business and employment opportunities to Canada
itself. The Iranian Canadian Congress therefore urges the
Canadian government to reengage with Iran as a matter of
utmost importance, to the benefit of Iranian-Canadians,
Canadian businesses, and Canadian interests in the region.
It is time for Canada to reclaim its proud history of
commitment to peace and international cooperation by fully
supporting this historic agreement and by reengaging with
Iran.

ICC Discussed Cases of Prof. Hoodfar and Saeed Malekpour
with Parliamentary Secretary Omar Alghabra
Here is a report about the teleconference the
President of the Iranian Canadian Congress, Bijan Ahmadi,
had with MP Omar Alghabra, the Parliamentary Secretary to
the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Consular Affairs), about
the cases of Prof. Homa Hoodfar and Saeed Malekpour:
On Friday June 17th, 2016, the President
of the Iranian Canadian Congress (ICC), Bijan Ahmadi,
partook in a teleconference with Member of Parliament Omar
Alghabra, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of
Foreign Affairs (Consular Affairs), discussing the cases of
Prof. Homa Hoodfar, and Mr. Saeed Malekpour. In this
conversation the ICC President expressed deep concerns in
regards to the recent arrest of Prof. Homa Hoodfar and the
report that her family and her lawyer have not been
permitted any visitations with her since the arrest. Bijan
Ahmadi, further extended trepidations about the health of
Ms. Hoodfar. As her family has shared, Ms. Hoodfar is
suffering from a rare and austere disease, and since her
arrest her family qualms the status of her health, as they
have not been able to provide her medication.
Withal, Parliamentary Secretary Omar
Alghabra expressed his deep concerns about Prof. Hoodfar, in
conjunction with providing reassurance to the ICC President
that the government of Canada is taking measures to secure
her safety and her release. According to Mr. Alghabra,
Canada discussed the case with cognate allies adept to
succour the matter.
Moreover, the ICC President discussed the
case of Mr. Saeed Malekpour, a Canadian resident, who was
imprisoned in Iran approximately 8 years ago, serving a life
sentence for a software program he developed. Bijan Ahmadi
accentuated that the ICC considers Mr. Malekpour as a member
of the Iranian Canadian community and requests the Canadian
government to follow up his case.
The present state of affairs between Iran
and Canada coalesce a challenge for Canada to follow up on
both the case of Prof. Hoodfar, and Mr. Saeed Malekpour.
Nonetheless, Mr. Alghabra has reassured the Iranian Canadian
Congress of his assurance to examine further, the case of
Mr. Malekpour, apprising the ICC of the prospective steps to
be taken in this matter.
Bijan Ahmadi extended his gratitude to
Parliamentary Secretary Omar Alghabra, and his team, for
their prompt pursuing of the case of Prof. Hoodfar and
opportune response to ICC's follow up. Conversant of the
Iranian Canadian Congress’s readiness in providing any, and
all, assistance and support in regards to both the case of
Prof. Hoodfar, and Saeed Malekpour, in consonance,
Parliamentary Secretary Omar Alghabra and Bijan Ahmadi will
recommence communication concerning both cases in
forthcoming weeks.

A
report from our outreach director regarding the roundtable
ICC hosted with a group of active Iranian Canadian
non-profit organizations on June 26, 2016:
Iranian Queer Organization
Persian
Arts and Culture Society of Ottawa

Statement regarding Prof. Homa Hoodfar's arrest in Iran
posted by Iranian Canadian Congress |
2343.40sc June 13, 2016 Date: June 13, 2016
We urge the government of Canada to seriously
pursue the matter, and take all available measures towards
securing the safety of Prof. Hoodfar, her release from
prison, and her safe return to Canada. #FreeHoma
For Immediate Release
The Iranian Canadian Congress calls on the
Government of Canada to take all available measures to
ensure Prof. Hoodfar’s immediate release and safe return to
Canada.
The Iranian Canadian Congress is deeply
concerned about Professor Homa Hoodfar’s arrest in Iran.
According to information from her family, Professor Hoodfar
was arrested in Iran for the first time in March of this
year and then released on bail. She was detained again on
Monday June 6 and has been denied the ability to see her
family or meet with her lawyer. Homa Hoodfar’s family have
requested the involvement of Canada’s Department of Global
Affairs in hopes of a swift and safe resolution.
We demand Dr. Hoodfar’s immediate release
and urge the government of Canada to seriously pursue the
matter, and take all available measures towards securing the
safety of Dr. Hoodfar and her release from prison. The
Iranian Canadian Congress is closely monitoring the course
of developments and will continue to communicate with the
family and acquaintances of Dr. Hoodfar here in Canada to
ensure that the case is given appropriate attention by both
the Canadian government and the greater public.
Additionally, the Iranian Canadian
Congress recognizes Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon.
Stéphane Dion for his outright denouncement of the arrest of
Professor Hoodfar, and further encourages the Department of
Global Affairs to pursue her case actively and with the
utmost care.
Sincerely, Board of Directors Iranian
Canadian Congress

Statement regarding Prof. Homa Hoodfar's arrest in Iran |

Condemnation of recent racial attack in London, Ontario
The Iranian Canadian Congress is deeply
saddened to hear of the news of the vicious racist attack
that occurred in London this week against one of the members
of the Iranian Canadian community, Mr. Mohammad Sharifi.
This kind of incident is unacceptable and is a threat to
Canada’s multicultural society. As such, we call upon the
Mayor of London, along with the London City Council, the
London Police Service, and the Ontario government to assure
that the perpetrators of this attack are brought to justice
immediately. Additionally, we ask that these bodies and
elected officials implement policies in collaboration with
the federal government to address and combat racism and
xenophobia not only in the City of London, but in the
province of Ontario and in Canada overall.
Incidents such as these show how much work
our society still has in front of it to create an
environment without prejudice and inequality. Only through a
coordinated effort between government, law enforcement and
civil society, can we make sure that our cities and
provinces are a place where everyone feels safe and equally
valued. As such, the Iranian Canadian Congress will continue
to pursue this case and assure that the appropriate leaders
and bodies keep this matter on top of their agenda. We also
invite other ethnic and civil society organizations to join
us in this effort and unify against such brutal and
unacceptable actions.
We thank London City Councillor Mohamed
Salih for his unequivocal condemnation of this action and on
his commitment to combating racism in his city and we call
upon other members of the London City Council to join their
colleague in this effort.
Sincerely, Board of Directors Iranian

Election Board 2016: Final Report
posted by Iranian Canadian Congress |

from Election Board 2016:

Dear Members of the Iranian Canadian
Congress,
The ICC 2016 Election Board is proud to
announce the following:
A successful and transparent election was
held on Sunday, May 15, 2016. Polls open from 10 am to 4:45
pm. The voting station was held open for an additional 15
minutes from the scheduled end time of 4:30pm to allow for
those attending the AGM to cast their ballot if they had not
done so earlier. As two of the 9 candidates, Maryam Nazemi
and Medi Shams, withdrew their candidacy for a position on
the ICC board the day before the elections, the second
ballots asking for members to vote for the 7 candidates they
wished to elect to the ICC board were no longer required.
Candidates were only provided the first ballot, and asked to
vote in favor or against the four motions that had been
raised for a vote at the AGM.
- Quorum was reached sometime around 3:15pm; the AGM started
shortly thereafter.
- Of the 560 Members who were eligible to vote,
305 members did so.
- 191 members voted in person, while 114
members voted by proxy;
- Counting of the ballots commenced after the AGM finished,
at or about 6:00 pm in the presence of all candidates, their
scrutineers, members of the ICC board, and members of our
community and media.
- A total of 303 ballots were cast.
The final vote count for 4 motions was as follows:
Motion #1: ICC President's Report:
Required vote to pass: %50 plus one, Vote counts: 288
Yes's vs. 5 No's
Motion #2: ICC Treasurer's Report:
Required vote to pass: %50 plus one, Vote counts: 283
Yes's vs. 7 No's
Motion #3: By-law Changes: Required vote
to pass: Two third, Vote counts: 267 Yes's vs. 26
No's
Motion #4: Member's Motion: Required vote
to pass: Two third, Vote counts: 253 Yes's vs. 48
No's
Based on passing of Motion #4, the
following candidates were acclaimed for a two year term as
new members of ICC Board of Directors: (Alphabetically
ordered)
- Mojtaba Adibrad - Ali Bangi - Tayaz
Fakhri - Mehran Farazmand - Behzad Jazizadeh - Dorna Mojdami
- Pouyan Tabasinejad
- There was one filed complaint
about the election process.
The complaint did not adhere to the procedures set by the
Election Board for filing a formal complaint, but was
considered by the Election Board none-the-less. The
complaint questioned whether a proxy authorization in which
the proxy giver did not specify the proxy holder at the time
of giving the authorization is valid. The process of voting
by proxy was delicately monitored by the Election Board and
its volunteers. The Election Committee confirms that no
proxy authorization form was accepted if it did not identify
the individual to whom authorization was given to vote by
proxy. However, the Election Committee is of the opinion
that a proxy authorization is not invalidated if the name of
the proxy holder is specified at a later time than when the
proxy giver signed the proxy authorization form; it is in
the proxy giver's discretion and judgement to authorize a
proxy without first knowing who will vote on his/her behalf.
- One ICC Member also raised what he
believed to be a potential irregularity. He believed that
those who had acquired their membership on May 15th 2015,
the day of the election, should be considered active
members. The issue of who is or is not a member is decided
by the ICC Board of Directors and was not an issue for the
Election Board to resolve. The ICC Board of Directors
reaffirmed its earlier decision that memberships are valid
for exactly 365 days (i.e. the membership of someone that
joined on May 15, 2015 expires on May 14, 2016). As
promised, the personal information of those who voted by way
of a proxy will be destroyed by the Election Board. We thank
voters for trusting the Election Committee with their
personal information in our efforts to safeguard against any
concerns of irregularity that may have been raised.
We thank the members of our community, the
ICC board of directors, and our wonderful volunteers for
helping make this election a success.
Respectfully yours,
ICC 2016 Election Board
